After just three months of new writing material, it looks like General Hospital may have just gone through another backstage shakeup — although this one kind of sets things back more to the way they were! Back in January, the ABC soap announced that it was replacing longtime headwriters Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor with daytime vets Patrick Mulcahey and Elizabeth Korte.

Korte had been serving as script writer and historian for the show, while Mulcahey’s daytime writing credentials stretch back to Search for Tomorrow in 1979. The new material only began airing in March, but now, after just a few months with the new headwriters, General Hospital seems to have possibly changed course yet again.

While onscreen, Brook Lynn and Chase’s wedding has dominated this week, as well as much of May Sweeps, offscreen, according to The Buzz, Mulcahey has reportedly been let go from the soap and Van Etten has been promoted back to co-headwriter. Korte, meanwhile, will reportedly remain in her position and share headwriting duties with Van Etten.

If true, it’s a bit of a whiplash moment, though the new writing material may not air until the summer as the sudser shoots a number of weeks in advance. However, as we went to press, General Hospital has not responded to a request for comment or offered confirmation on the veracity of the story. We’ll be sure to update you on any information as we learn of it.
